Hi all. I recently installed a fixed 12 pole tach on my 88 merc classic 50. My tach has erratic readings.Idle seems a little high and at WOT i am showing 7000 RPM's. I have a 15 foot procraft trihull with a 10-3/8 dia x 13 Pitch prop. The engine sounds fine and definetly doesn't sound like it's hitting 7K.The tach on occasion reads Zero RPM.The pole setting is fixed at 12 poles.I tested my rectifier and it show ok.Any advice would be welcome. Thanks

Had the exact same thing happen to me. I removed the Tach from the dash, cleaned and tightened all connections and it's working like a champ. Maybe give that a try....

Thanks.i might try that. I will also make sure there aren't any potential noise sources that may be factoring into my false tach readings.i will post if that works.

A bad or failing rectifier can cause this. Get your motor good and warm before testing it.

I've seen them bench test good, but then go on the fritz after the motor warms up.

I think i will just go to radio shack and get a full wave rectifier and cover all of my bases. i hear that the RS part is superior to the OEM anyway.

I wouldn't jump that conclusion too quickly. RS part is less expensive, but like any other electronic supply house, you got to read the specification for the component.

At a slightly higher price, you could order from Digikey.com. They are the supplier used by most engineer for prototyping. They will have every rectifier on the market to choose from.

I could go with digikey as radio shacks biggest rectifier is only rated for 8 amps @ 400 volts.i just retested my rectifier and it is testing good and my charging system is definetly working. i will try to test it with the engine good and warm like outboardnut suggested. i also plan to examine my wiring to make sure i didn't mess up anything when i rewired my boat.

Re: Erratic tach reading

I have a 92 115 mariner 4 cylinder. The boat sat for over a year without even running, then I ran it last fall. Winterized it and it sat through the winter. Now this summer, It's had this problem of not starting. It also has had erratic tach and volt readings. I attributed it to the circular main harness inside the motor cover. It would go to having nothing when you turn the key, to it turning over and having it not even try to start at all. When this is acting up I know because the tilt won't work on my stick shift to raise the motor. I've got a tilt switch on the front and back, and on the '**** pit' tilt on the shifter. When it's done this, I opened the cover and pull that loom apart and put it back together, everything worked again. WELL, now yesterday it sounded like the motor had a knock in it. I inspected today took the spark plugs out and there was some flakey gray looking stuff stuck in one of the spark plugs. I pulled the cover on the back of the motor and as I am turning the flywheel by hand, I can hear a strange noise coming from the top of the lower unit. Could a carb problem be the cause? I'm going to take the left side of the motor apart too to look at the pistons. I'll report back but besides if I see a scored piston, what else could it be? What should I look for if there's a spun bearing? The knock I heard wasn't a loud knock but it was surely enough to get my attention. I originally thought oh electrical, like a cylinder was not firing, at all but what should I look for if it's more than just a cylinder not firing at all?

Check to see if the stator under the flywheel is red in color, or black. Before the old black stators would fail, the tacho. reads irratic.
Just a thought......

Re: Erratic tach reading

Well Taz, i think you motor will have to come apart as the gray material you are talking about is probably melted aluminum as mercury uses needle bearings on that motor i think. You are looking at a minimum a complete teardown and possibly a total overhaul. Thats not even considering the electronics that may need work. You will have to balance the cost of fixing this ons VS just buying another one.Do a compression test to see if that cylinder is reading low or no compression compared to the others. What concerns me is that if you have enough damage to a piston to actually make a noise you can hear then you might have extreme motor damage, possibly something that cant even be bored out.Good luck
