Tachometer jumps all over the gauge - idle may read 3000 rpm or wot may read 1500 rpm.<br />Gauge wiring is ok. Where on the engine is tach signal originated?

Re: ERRATIC TACH

You didn't say what year and hp engine you have.A few things could cause your problem.A reg/rec on its way out, tach not set to proper position,or a failing tach.

Re: ERRATIC TACH

First thing to do is insure that the tach setting on the back of the tach is set exactly to position 6 and all wire connections are clean and tight. If so , insure that the charging system is operating by measuring voltage across battery terminals with the engine running on the hose.Check voltage at idle rpms and then rev to around 2000 to 2400 rpms and note if the voltage comes up to around 13 volts.Don't rev past say 2500 rpms on an unloaded engine. If your boat is equipped with a known good volt meter ,you can verify output by reading it.
