I have been looking for your spriing, The only thing I can see/think of is a possible spring on the idle mixture screw

"As i unscrewed the mounting plate that attaches to the carb..."

Probably, the spring you describe serves as an 'anti-vibration' "brake" to help hold the carb's mixture settings. It mounts under that "plate" that attaches to the front of the carb.

The coiled end wraps around the choke shaft and the tag end should "load" onto the shaft for the idle mixture adjust.

The idle adjust shaft is absent from my image because the flexible drive (that resembles a tightly-wound spring) for the idle adjust was mangled on what I have so I Dremeled it off and just cut a screwdriver slot.

Hope this helps.

the spring i think you are describing slides over the choke shaft, long arm on spring extends over to the carb adjusting knob shaft and serves as a stop it hits a set screw in the shaft
