3.0 mercruiser alpha 1. WOT about 4000 rpms...

I just can not seem to get WOT RPM's, and I am starting to blame the EST ignition. Has anyone had any real experience with them vs the points?

New fuel pump, two rebuilt carbs with same results, good compression, good cap/rotor, new plugs. I even toyed with the timing at specs and a few deg out and in giving or taking 100 rpm at wot.

I am thinking about putting the points distributor in. I was just wondering if anyone out there who had both what they prefer and why. Maybe everyone knows the EST is junk, except me?? Or maybe it is awesome, I don't know.

Re: EST Ignition

EST works just fine.

Have you actually confirmed your tach against a known good tach? Tach's are known to be off by more than a few hundred rpms in either direction.

19 pitch prop on a 19' CC.

I had this boat up to 39 mph at the begining of the season. Now I am getting 31 - 33 tops at 3800 - 4000. I'll keep looking. I have done so much work to this thing. I guess I need to back track and find what changed.
