Etec 40hp-60hp powerhead swap onto carburated midsection ?

Examining the adapter gaskets, and was hoping someone could confirm that an etec 40-60hp powerhead will fit on the older midections (1989-2005). the driveshaft looks the same (i believe 92 and up was fine spline on the carbed motors). this project has intrigued me for a while, as etec powerheads are plentiful in this size, minus ecu and injectors but still very reasonable. i am even leaning towards seeing if the even older (1972-1988) midsections will accept one, barring having to change the gearcase of course. the adapter gaskets are the same, driveshaft matches up. shift shaft would probably need to be changed, but not certain.
