I havn't seen the infomercial , but could somebody explain how a two stroke can have direct injection , which I assume has no oil load. How is the crank lubricated and how does this compare to a other direct injection systems ???

Re: ETEC lubrication question

Might be easier to get to the Manufactures site and read up on how the motor works.

Re: ETEC lubrication question

In a nutshell, the E-TEC uses a pressure pump to feed oil to each cylinder. As the oil is injected against the moving piston, it turns into a fine spray inside the crankcase, thus lubricating the crank, rods, cylinders, bearings, etc. There are recirculation passageways to route the oil to other places where it is needed.

www.evinrude.com is a good place to get more info.

Seahorse, I too had the same question. I had expected however, that the crank and rods were drilled to allow oil to travel through them (as in automobiles), and then there was some sore of atomization (at the ends of the wrist pin?) to lube the piston rings and skirt. The question I had was how the motor could burn such little oil? The advertisements claim you fill the motor's resevoir only once/season. It would seem that the motor must run the equivalent of 500::1 (or something)

Re: ETEC lubrication question

I went through the website video's today at work , much better bandwidth, if the oil is pumped into the piston rigs and then sprayed around, why not close off the system and make it a wet sump. I could see that the piston traveling back would presurise the air in the system to force it into the cylinder but you could acheive that with a blower ? As far as I can tell there is no requirement for a two stroke to burn oil at all , it just happens that they do, unless the oil increases the octane rating so you can push higher compression.

Re: ETEC lubrication question

The oil lowers the octane rating of the fuel. That is one reason not to, on engines that require premix, to add more oil than necessary. If the bearing are rolling smoothly with 50:1, they aren't going to roll smoother using 25:1.

The "once per season" statement is based on use.

The way it works: This engine has a special oil.(XD-100) If you use this oil exclusively, then you can program the "EMM" to use(XD-100) at a different rate than "normal" TCW-3. If you use this setting then the amount of oil in the reservoir will last about the average boating season.(again, depending on usage)
