I am considering repowering my 17' whaler with a 90 hp etec. I have been running for years with a 1979 115 evinrude. To my surprise the Etec 90 is listed at 320# with 20" shaft. But my service manual for my old motor list the weight at 301#. Why is the three cylinder etec 19#s heavier than my old motor? I really would like to reduce the weight but I would have to go down to a 60hp etec to find a motor lighter than my 115hp.

It's all those electronics and control system, as well as the injection system.

yep funny thing, I repowered from the really big and heavy 120HP looper to a 115 ficht and gained a couple of pounds (on the motor of course, not my waistline)

I've just bought a new etec 90 - and the extra weight probably accounts for the good looks!!!
.
.
.
.
Or onboard oil tank??

Funny thing, I'm 20 lbs heavier than when I got married, but my wife isn't looking for a lighter model!(haha!)

19 lbs isn't much. Why do you need it to be lighter?

I think what the point was that you go down in HP but gain weight, and, if you have twin motors the gain is doubled (of course)and the HP is less again! kinda odd huh, as Sherman said, he needed to go down to 60HP to get a weight saving.

Well I run in very rough ocean waters most of the time and while drift fishing for rock cod or mooching for salmon the boat turns stern to the wind and steep chop occasionally dumps a lot of water into the splash well and into boat. I have closed down the transom opening about ten inches on each side to cut down on this problem.
This all adds up 300# main motor, 75# kicker. 40# battery, two downriggers 10# each with 10# weights, a fuel water separator 5# and the bilge pump 2# and me 198# all adds up to about 660#s. Don't even say it I just lost 72#s and I'm not losing any more.

19# is the equivalent of just over 3 gallons of gasoline.

Your 27 year old Evinrude has a 6 or 12 amp charging system, which is very light duty. The 90 E-TEC has much heavier flywheel magnets and a larger heavier stator, 3 metal injectors, and a computer box that makes up the weight difference, plus it has a 20 amp charging system. Your motor may not even have a power trim unit on it which weights in at about 15#.

The E-TEC will surprise you with how quiet is is, how smooth, no smoke at all, the your fuel use will be cut in half, or even better. Oil consumption is a lot less, too. Since its inits 3rd year of production now, it's known as a good reliable motor.
