Evenrude 70hp year?

Hi all...I managed to scrape and pick the serial # tag to show some numbers that might help..
I was told it was a 1991,but it looks a tad older from info I have seen on this site..

Part of the model # - J70TLC - the remaining is gone.
Serial # - J5980548 (the 805 part is a little sketchy).

It has an Evinrude cowling but everything seems to point to a Johnnyrude.Some 1991 parts did work on it till I needed a new tilt tube and the part calls for the exact model # and year..
Any help would be great..

If you're correct about the first part of the model, then it's definitely NOT a 1991 motor.

J = Johnson
70 = 70 hp
T = tilt and trim, electric start
L = 20"
C = 198?

Do you have a camera that's capable of taking a very close-up, in focus, picture of the tag? Sometimes I've found that with my photo editing software, I can lighten/darken, or add contrast to, a bad picture ... and enlarge it ... to be able to make out some details that aren't readily obvious to the naked eye.

Thanks for the fast reply...I tried everything in the shop like you said and still a no go...Does the serial #s add a clue? There is a hole where the model numbers were..My mechanic who kinda will not be my mechanic in the future gave me grief 2 weeks later when I asked him to order me a tilt tube and I wasnt sure of the year and model number.He had the engine at his shop for three weeks and put 1991 parts on it when I told him I thought it was a 91 but he had better check...He informed me also that he gets $95.00 an hour and then proceeded to print out a parts list and threw a yellow marker at me and said to circle what I wanted as he walked out of his shop....While he muttered if I am in here with you my guys are getting no work done...

Man...this has been painful...

look for plug on top of motor.

Does the serial #s add a clue?

A Johnson or Evinrude dealer might be able to look up the model by the serial number, but that info isn't "public" information.
