I've owned Mercury V6's for years and know nothing about Evenrude motors.

I'm looking at a boat powered by a 2000 225HP Evenrude with EFI. I know nothing about Evenrude and would like to get some opinions on them.

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Fitch Evenrude EFI any good?

they had a bad reputation. the FICHTs were not OMC's proudest moment.

If it wasn't for Bombadier (sp?), Ficht would have been the end of OMC outboards.

Thanks. I thought I had heard that before and had a nagging feeling about this motor.

Most of the Ficht problems were on the 60-degree loopers. The one you are looking at is a 90 degree engine and it did not have the failure rates of the others. Model year 2000 and newer were produced by Bombardier and they were vastly improved over the OMC 1999 and older engines. Check it out like any engine, compression, lower unit, etc. Also, have a dealer do a computer dump to check hours by rpm's and for fault codes.

OK, this sounds interesting. By "Vastly Improved" does that mean that these are generally reliable engines or just not as bad as the older 60 degree ones? I know that's all subjective but I'm just trying to get a handle on where these things stand in the big scheme of things.

Thanks

I love my 2000 Ficht 75H, but I think the problems were with the larger motors and especially befor Bombabier purchased OMC.

I agree the 1997-98 60 degrees where a problem but the newer computer, oiling system, pinned heads & injectors dropped the failure rate by 2000-2001. The 90 degree looper (3.0)had the major problems and did not get to a reliable 'engine" til about 2001(3.3) and still not that good untill they got water system figued out.(2003) A lot of failures where still due to oiling, temp(pin migration) and EMM problems. If the engine has been well maintained, good oil used, impeller serviced yearly it could be a good engine but I would do as suggested and have dealer check EMM for codes and history.
