Evenrude mystery

My '72 Evinrude 50, 2 cyl w/ electronic ignition sometimes won't start when cold. It has no spark. Eventually, it gets spark and will fire. Once it does start, it runs great and will restart every time until it gets cold again, then may or may not start. I can't find anything wrong. I recently found out that if I jump the white sensor wire at the power pack to ground, it will start every time. Once it starts, I can disconnect the ground and it runs fine. Any idea what this could be?

Are you sure that it is making good ground to start with? Clean off the ground wire and reconnect everything. Should be fine.

Re: Evenrude mystery

I have removed every wire and ground and cleaned the contacts already, but the problem persists. Could it be a problem inside the power pack? Also, can this wire be grounded permantly (i.e. can I just run a wire from ground to the white lead)?

Thanks

Re: Evenrude mystery

Do you have two ignition coils on this or is it just the power pack. If you have ignition coils swap the wires and see if you still have to jump the wire. If you do then that coil is bad. The only way to chech the power pack is to replace it.
