I was at the ramp the other day and just brought the boat back in from a day on the water. The guy in the lane next to me already had his trailer backed in and his boat on it. His family was with him. He jumped in his truck and started to pull out and SCRAPEEEE his older son yells "Hey dad you didnt put the motor up" at the top of his lungs. The dad stops the truck gets out with his face bright red and says well get on and put it up then. I think he might have been hurring for me even though there are 5 lanes and noone else was around. I tipped my hat to him and went to get my truck and he was gone when I got back.

I told my wife that if she thinks im messing something up or sees me forget something then to come tell me quietly but it never fails right when the trailer tires hit the water she yells "Hey hun did you remember the plug?" it agrivates the crap out of me. anyone else feel bad for the other guy? I have seen plenty of people down at the river just sit back and laugh thier heads off at people (the main reason I dont use the main dock but drive 15 extra minutes to a less used one.)

Yup know the feeling. I never get in trouble at the ramp unless I am rushing to get out of the way of a crowd. Just Sunday I was launching and since I was by myself I tied my anchor rope to the dock and quickly jumped into my truck and took off to get out of the way of someone waiting on the ramp. What I didn't know was the rope was looped around the back roller of my trailer. Pulled that damn boat halfway up the ramp before I realized something was wrong. No damage done but awful embarrassing to have to get a couple of guys to help me push it back into the water. It never pays to rush.

I hear what you are saying GatorMike.
I tend to go to lesser used docks myself.
I hate having to rush for other people. I usually go boating by myself because I don't have the patience to wait for my friends who say "yeah I'll go boating with you, but just give my a couple hours to get ready and be over".
Not too many of my buds are willing to get up at 5am to go fishing, so I go myself.
It's much easier, and less stressful going to a lesser used dock.

I have paid enough tax to the county and will use the public dock nearest to my house. Even if there are 20 people waiting to use the dock I will take my time to launch my boat. If they don't like it they can go somewhere else less congested. You should ne be rush to launch your boat but take time to check everything is in place before launching. One thing I learn from an old coast gurad guy, he said that if you hurry mistake bound to happen and no one is perfect so don't feel ashame to take your time. And I am sticking to his advise. TAKE YOUR TIME.

Re: Ever feel bad for the other guy?

Since we were all new at one point, and I've made my share of mistakes, I do feel bad for the other guys at times. Although I do believe that some people deserve what they get. An a$$hole that cuts you off at the ramp and who forgets his plug deserves to be laughed at when his boat is sinking. I will usually offer the plug from my boat if the person is even 51% nice. I've even pulled my plug from my boat while it is in the water to save their boat (One of the fun things about owning a Boston Whaler!). But, I might make a jerk wait if I am in the middle of loading/unloading when they realize their mistake. Of course, I don't tell them that the water is only about 1 1/2 feet deep where their boat is resting...
