Ever see this happen?????

Last week I had my Force 15HP in the test tank and ran up the RPM's darn near full throttle when it just died. Suddenly had no spark. Found the flywheel had broken its key and spun on the crankshaft. Has anyone ever seen this happen before??? and if so, what was the cause??? While taking it apart, it DOES appear that the breaker plate may have been advanced too far. Although my service manual states that the timing is not adjustable, I can clearly see where the breaker plate AND throttle linkage can be adjusted separately from each other. Last question, can I get the flywheel key from any small engine repair shop or is it something that will have to be bought from a Marina?? Your words of wisdom please.....

I have seen this happen. A good log strike can shear them, so check the lower unit.
Also, backfiring, a worn crankshaft taper, loose flywheel or improper key can cause this. Keys and key stock can be had at most auto parts stores or lawnmower shops.

Re: Ever see this happen?????

Thanks 12 Footer,
I picked up a couple of flywheel keys at a small engine shop. Checked the lower unit, spins freely, no binding or tightness. Will put the beast back together later this week and adjust the breaker plate since it WAS too far advanced last time it ran and spun the flywheel. Won't run it up to WOT without a load on it anymore either....
Thanks again
