Reading the post on handling fish made me think of the times i've went noodling. I've done it a few times on river and canal banks. It is really alot of fun. Has anyone here done it before?

Re: Ever tried Noodling?

I personally haven't done it, but my grandfather used to go to the Brazos River (TX). My grandmother who recently passed away had a photo of him taken years ago with several fish and each weighed over 65 pounds. I guess each year they made a special trip just for that purpose.

My understanding is that noodling is where you attempt to catch fish of almost equal size as the fisherman, using your hand as bait.

Actually I got some work buddies from Oklahoma who love to talk about it... ;)

Back in my younger days, I was known to noodle a fish or two and some other things I did not want to noodle.

Pity the guy with the bag.
He never knew what I was coming up with and hurling his way. :D

Noodling for Mr.Whiskers is a very passive hobby compared with noodling for the Musky if ya know what I mean

I tried it once and my reattached fingers are doing very well now.. :D

LOL, we don't don't have the musky here, but the flats and blues are very abundant and willing. My personal best noodle was about a 40lbs flat.

Re: Ever tried Noodling?

Have some buddies that do this for snapping turtles. They come down to the farm every other year and crawl down the small creeks on their bellies reaching up into muskrat holes to feel for turtles. They pull some big one out. Get bit once in a while too and not always by a turtle. I won't do it but I will defend to the hilt their right to get bitten and I will also laugh and drink beer while I watch them.

hahahah I am with Fireman57. I once watched a buddy almost drown noodling a 70 pound cat. it clamped down on his arm and he could not get the fish out nor would the fish let go. the Brazos was a wonderful place. we fished it from Grandbury almost to waco once.
poor buddy had an arm that looked like ground hamburger when done but he got the fish :) .
good luck and keep posting

The trick with the turtles is finding the tail.
You have to do it real slow as not to spook them.
Run your hand up the side untill you find the tail.
If it ain't the tail, run your hand the other way.

If it is the tail, grab it and come out with it fast.

They can and will twist their neck and bite you. :(

Re: Ever tried Noodling?

guess I will post here. Noodling refers to a term called float fishing. Where you use a reel called a center pin float reel, and a rod with good back bone but a super quick tip, in the 12 to 14 foot length. Actually if you want to learn about float fishing something we do a great deal up here in canada for salmom and trout check out floatfishing.net

Re: Ever tried Noodling?

Spinner you say it a way i wish i could explain..Kinda like fishn...we who fish have different techniques and approaches to fishing..One way is no better that the other..We are all different..

Its when you try and force ones way of thinking on how to catch the fin you start animosity by saying your way is the best..Your way is no better than the others..If you catch the fin that that you are persuing does it really matter..

Milo thanks for the the post..Now I know there are two ways where the word noodling takes on a different approch..It still has to do with the different techniques involved when one persues the fin...Thank you..I have learned something new today from our Canadian friends..

Its kinda like Prairie dog fishn(calm down here)or other ways that fin or other animals are pursued.. ;)

Re: Ever tried Noodling?

About a year ago PBS had a program on about noodling. Them guys have more guts than I do. Ain't no way I'm going to walk around in the waters edge and stick my hand in a hole to catch a cat.

If I'm not mistaken the art of noodling is legal in only three states. Oklahoma is the only one I can remember.
