Was bored and thinking. (why it sucks to be waiting for parts and out of work). Has anyone ever removed an engine from a boat and used it in another aplication like a car or dune bugy or something. Just kinda curious if it can be done?

Obviously the hard part would be routing the cooling hoses and using a radiator and electrical if its a fancy engine with efi and comptuers and a transmission. Easy part would be removing the raw water pump system and rigging the exhaust.

What u guys think?:)

found it

the caption said evinrude 2 stroke v8 so i am assuming it is a outboard motor

If not I apologize.

here

quote from one response

"That would be a power head from an omc evinrude v8 outboard made back in the late 80's, they came stock in either A 3.6litre 300 horse or a 4.0litre version."

Another

"The motor is from an Evinrude outboard engine for boats, Indy Cars don't run two strokes, they are alcohol burning 4 strokes "

Back in the late 50s it was common for guys to show up at the Kart Races powered by adapted outboard engines in the 5 to 15HP range. They made wonderful sounds but weren't very competitive with the adapted chainsaw and bike engines.

On the other hand I saw an H-modified sports racer built very much like a Kart and powered by a big Merc 6 that was a holy terror; went like a dragster and handled like a Kart.

Wow thanks for the link. Thats pretty awesome 2 stroke v8 engine.

I guess it can be down with outboards, so id imagine sterndrives would work to. Awesome, almost makes me want to takle on another project. :)

Now I have an Idea, I have an old SPL88 V4 powerhead in the garage that is wore out but still runs. Maybe I should toss it on a go kart frame, use some snowmobile clutches an make a plate to mount a single small 2bbl holley carb on it inplace of the 2 stock carbs. 88hp LIGHT go kart! I've built a kart for my buddy with a ~90hp R6 bike engine but that was pretty heavy and a shifter, 88hp automatic would be a blast.
