I have read the posts of this oft asked question and still cannot solve my problem.
I have a 1990 225 ETLD and do not have sufficient water pressure at idle. The telltale is very weak and water will not even come out the plug at the top of the heads if you remove it. The alarm does not go off but it is still too hot.
I have changed the impeller, poppet (cleaned pocket as well) and thermostats and still cannot get the pressure up. I even tried clamping the hose from the poppet to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. The passage ways all appear clear as air can be blown through with little resistence.
The water pump housing is not warped and seals fine. i cannot see anything that looks like it needs replacing. Nevertheless, I could change the whole water pump? I dunno! Any other ideas? Thx.

By all means, change ALL water pump components everytime you go into it, not just the impeller. The impeller runs and wears against the housing and and bottom plate etc. I had that on an old 10 horse Evinrude once when I was a kid. Went back and replaced everything and worked great.

also, especially in salt water, remove and clean the rubber dam and metal holder under and just aft of the wear plate.
inspect the housing for any melt. ANY sign of melt means the housing is junk.

I discovered the water seal between the pump and the water tube that runs up the leg is missing. The housing cover was there but when I pulled it off there was no grommet. As soon as I replace it I will report back. I am guessing I have found my ghost.

PROBLEM SOLVED! Water pressure is normal. Nothing like buying a motor from a dealer and having parts missing.
