Instead of muffs, I’m filling up my recycling bin. Looks like the prop is clear. This OK? I can’t see why not.

Looks good to me. Just keep it full, and check the temp of the water after a few minutes, as it'll get warm and not help cool the motor very well.

Ended up with the overheating horn yelling at me. Not sure why, the water intakes were fully submerged.

Pee holes spitting water ok? You want at least a few inches of water above your water intakes, as the exhaust bubbles will limit how much water you're drawing in. I popped out my thermostat (left the cover off) and let the motor run for a minute, so I could verify that water was flowing through the motor. It's possible to get water flowing out the pee hole, but not flowing through the motor.

Make sure the water level is 2-3 inch over the split line of the LU.
The water impeller need water in the housing to pump.

That was probably the issue. The motor was at 45*, and while the intakes were in, the impeller was out.

I hope you weren't testing a new impeller. Cuz it's probably shot now.

unless you get the water more than a few inches above the raw water pump in the lower unit........ you toasted it.

they only push water, they do not draw water.

raw water pumps require to be submerged to prime, then as the boat moves in the water, water is forced up to the pump

so unless your tub is big enough to get most of the boat that is in the way, use the muffs.

I took it out on the lake after trying the recycling bin bull**** and everything is fine, minus a few times it killed when going into gear from a long time in neutral. Is that a symptom of a bad impeller?

Relatedly - does anyone have a source for a replacement kit (1998 Force 90HP)? I’d like to do one regardless soon. Thanks all.

Not deep enough.
The pump isn't a self priming pump.
It needs to be 4" over the cav plate or 4 "
over the impeller and housing.
But once it gets a prime you can start it and
it should prime itself.

99% of the time all you need is the impeller.
In 89 they went to a pump with a stainless cup for the
impeller, the pot metal used for the housing is pretty
much indestructible!!
It can be pitted and scarred but work great(I know
because I had a pair of them on my boat).
