So now that we are in a new year, I'm back to planning the repaint of my 16' Glastron tri-hull fishing boat.

I want a decent shiny finish that will last a few years. re-gelling is an interesting idea, but the amount of sanding needed is a put-off. My front runner right now is to take the boat back to teh original gel, prime with Interlux's epoxy prime, and lay down a couple coats of Interlux Perfection. I'm not sure that Brightsides would give me the longevity or abrasion restance I want (am I wrong here?).

One of my big questions is how much paint? I'm assuming 1gal of primer, but how much color to do a 16' hull? Will 3 qts cover it? I would prefer to spray, but due to the toxic fumes of this stuff, I may roll/tip.

I haven't ruled out Gel or even something like the urethane kit here: http://www.smartshoppersinc.com

Maybe 3 quarts of each, the trick here is to sand and finish until it makes you ill. Find every little imperfection you can, it's a bit like creating a surface so smooth it's like a glass mirrior.

When it comes to painting i would not tip and roll it, there are plenty of good respriator's out there and if you use a HPLV gun there will be much less over spray. Then there's the time factor, if you preped right it will take only 10 minutes to shoot a layer on the boat, that's it.

And yes perfection is a superior paint, and as to the sanding id give it your all, the result's the paint will give you will surprise you, no orange peel like a car just a very high gloss mirror like finish, Good luck it's a adventure.
