Went to help a friend of mine who bought a 1977 35 HP Evinrude. It iddled very rough, We found it was leaking at upper cranckshaftseal. Compression 132 on both. Upon replacing this ( without disassembling motor ) it iddles smooth. But it sure has a rattling sound !! Checked if flywheel touches magnetos - it doesnt. When laying force on flywheel from cylinderside of motor, flywheel can be moved app. 1/32". When flywheel is turned 1/4 turn, play is almost none. It must be upper bearing - or do you think cranck journal ? Can he run it with the play - rattle decreases when rpm gets up ? Any opinion is appreciated.
We only run it in barrel - on rpr below 2000.

I wouldn't run any motor with that much play. Find out exactly what the problem is and fix it. If it is the main bearing he will not like it when the motor blows when out in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks Bill appreciate it very much. Is there any normal play - or any limit for acceptable play.

Do anyone have experience in running with some play ?? This motor isnt of high value - however he´s like to uyse it a couple of years.

G Dane,
From my experiences I would say that most bearing play is usually so minimal that you wouldn't notice it. If you can notice any play at all chances are something is very wrong and should be fixed. But then I am nothing more than a backyard mechanic and usually go by the manuals.

I really miss the experience from someone repairing and disassembling a lot of theese models - is it acceptable to run with some play, and check it now an then with a gauge - or is it just to be waiting for break-down
