I just bought an old evinrude motor. It has touchy choke, runs about a minute and dies. There is no air filter and the water is not pumping. Has good spark, previous owner said it was tuned last year, and it looks clean. Stats; Evinrude Fisherman serial 5524B-07272 5.5Hp @ 4000rpm range 3500rpm-4500rpm. Current spark gap .030, flywheel marked 'set points .20'. Can't find any other markings. Opened thermostat, it's dry as a bone. Any suggestions? What year is it? where's the water pump?

Thanks
Mike

Mike,
The water pump is rubber and is in the lower unit. If you ran it that long withoout water it might need replacing. If thw motor has set any length of time the carb. could be gummed up and causing your idle problems. Good luck.
Dave

The thermostat will not normally open until it gets to operating temp. Whe you find out the year get a manual or hit your library. At a minimum plan on repalcing the impeller in the water pump as described in the manual.

Thanks Dave! I've never worked on a boat motor. I did have it in a bucket of water when I ran it. Can't find any thing rubber. I tried to take bottom section off with the propeler. Must hold the gear box. Shifts into gear when I pull down, but won't come off. Is this the lower unit? How do I get it off? Looks like I'll be able to get the carb off ok. Shouldn't there be an air filter?

not familiar with that motor... but most OMC's like that have a little cover plate on the side of the leg which covers the linkage connector. If yours is like this you simply pull one of the bolts out of the coupler/connector and the lower unit will probably fall off if all the lower unit bolts are off. Regular pain kind of job but pretty much a piece of cake.

I don't believe outboards use an air filter. I think this is because there is not too much dust encountered in a marine environment.
