I'm having some trouble with an Evinrude 1991 100hp V4.

When we try to start it the remote power control chirps and the solenoid seems to click - but the starter is not engaged.

Battery and connections seem to be OK.

If the remote control thinks the gears are engaged would the solenoid click?
What else could be wrong?

thanks

"Battery and connections seem to be OK."

"seem" is not good enough, Kev. They can look great and be plenty tight and still have enough hidden corrosion to prevent the starter from getting high current.

Quick, simple and free: Take the cables off, clean them up and reattach.

Measure battery voltage with starter engaged. If it drops below about 9V you need a charge or a new battery.

Good luck, and let us know how it comes out. :)

get a jumper cable and put 12 volts directly to the starter lug,if it cranks, its probably a bad solonoid, assuming all connections are good, ground cable as well on battery and engine,if you still have problems, check your cables for any cuts ,wear spots etc, over time a cable that is cut will slowly corrode, the rubber jacket may be there but the copper inside corrodes away

On your motor, the warning horn is supposed to chirp when you first turn the ignition key to the run position; that is the test beep which is part of the system and lets you know that your warning horn is OK.
