Evinrude 110 Broken Drive shaft???

I own a 1987 Evunrude 110. I let my brother in law use it. Said he was motoring along at trolling speed and the motor suddenly revved up a bit and the boat stoped moving. No forward or reverse.

How easy is it for a drive shaft to just break?
Would there be any grinding noises?

When a drive shaft breaks it is usually a clean break, you woun't here any grinding. Check your lower unit to see if it is seized, might have caused your problem.
