Evinrude 115 Operating Temperature?

I have a pair of 1998 115 FICHT OceanRunners that run great.

In summer, with water temp of the ocean at ~89 degrees, the engines run at ~190+ degrees at 5000 RPM which seems high.

Last week the water cooled off to 77 and they ran at ~160 to 165 (normal to me).

Water pressure is good at 30+ PSI at WOT and 7 PSI at idle.

As I understand it, the thermostats come off the seats with the water pressure and are essentially "wide open" when running at 4000 RPM plus.

Is it just the fact that the ambient water is so warm that the engines do not cool as well since there is no conventional thermostat to regulate water flow which has excess capacity as in an inboard?

I have replaced both stats in one engine with no change and the temperatures are confirmed with the diagnostic software which uses a different sender than the gauges, all of which are in agreement and spot-on. Is this just OMC engineering?

Thanks.

It sounds high to me too.I would flush motors with a salt away type of product and see if any change. If not I would take out the thermostat for a test drive and note temps.I have a 150 ocean pro and the temp gage barely moves up at all under all conditions.Charlie

By the way,its about 190 that salt water starts to crystalize so you may have a restriction.Charlie

Most OMC motors "should" run around 140-145. Not sure about the FICHT though.

Good point on the temp range SoLittle,I was apprehensive to comment on this topic because I wasn"t sure of the normal operating temp range of the ficht engines. However,I'll be interested in any technical comment on the subject.
