Evinrude 115HP, year: 1975, model 115593

This motor ran well before this incident happened now it wont start and I only have spark on one side of the motor. My negative battery cable was loose and while cranking the engine it would not turn over and only make crackling sounds. I got it back home and fixed the battery connection problem. Now it turns over good and fast but never attempts to kick in. I checked the spark and found that I have spark on 2 & 4 cyl but not 1 & 3. The factory service manual I have tells me to use some type of neon tester which I do not have, and can not find, so that is of little help. There is a troubleshooting step chart which indicates, when there is only spark on two cylinders, it is either the power pack or sensor coil. But before I go replacing either one of these I want to do more testing. Can anyone point me to some testing procedures I can do with my multimeter to figure out what I need to fix?

mark if it has 2 power packs switch them, if you then have spark on 1&3 but not 2&4 you have a bad power pack.good luck.:joyous:

mark i just looked up your motor and see you have only 1 pack so you may want to go to cdi electronics.com they have step by step checklist good luck.

Per the instructions on cdielectronics.com I switched the trigger base leads on the power pack 2 & 4 with the leads on 1 & 3 and sure enough, the no-spark condition switched from one side of the motor to the other. Does this tell me that my timing base is bad? The instructions say what to test, but are not clear what the faulty component is when a test fails.

Secondly, before doing this test I removed the flywheel and stator and took a look down inside the ignition system. I found one of the charge coils has a crack and had dripped melted stuff down onto the motor. With all that being said, could this be my problem instead of the timing base?

you should re epoxy that crack.
If you still have spark and your battery charges then itl do just fine
if you are saying you can get spark on both powerpacks when you switch the leads then they are ok and your timerbase is broken.
you can test the timerbase with a multimeter

Just to clarify, I only have one power pack. I have spark on the 2&4 cylinders, no spark on 1&3. Per CDI directions, I switched the 1&3 leads on the power pack with the 2&4 leads (those leads coming from the timerbase). Upon cranking, now I have spark on 1&3 but not 2&4. This tells me I need a new timerbase?
