i have a 94 evinrude 120 that is skipping or something. i have replaced the plugs and checked for spark and checked compression. i also just replaced the fuel pump. all that seems to be fine. when i give it the gas it just wants to bog down. it will eventually catch up and run but spits and sputters a little but never does run top speed. i just took it to the lake and ran it. i ran it for 20 minutes or so and it may have ran right for just a few minutes. dont know if carbs need rebuilding or coil or power pack. anybody have a clue? thanks!

Re: evinrude 120 problem

If you think you have a carb issue you probably do. Just something to keep in mind - on your motor, whether you use oil injection or not, if a cylinder is not getting fuel because of your partially plugged carb then that cylinder is not getting oil either. Trying to run the motor in hopes of the carb cleaning itself isn't the best idea. If it were mine I'd start with a good carb cleaning just to make sure we don't damage a piston.

Can we assume you are running with the airbox cover on?

Try hitting the choke/primer when it wants to bog down and see what happens.

If you are not sure if it is due for a carb service then it is due.

Re: evinrude 120 problem

i took this to a mechanic a few weeks ago for him to check this out. thats how i ended up with the fuel pump. said it was leaking and needed to be replaced. that thing was $430 just for the pump!! didnt fix the problem though.

Im thinking its your carbs does it idle ok?
when my 150 evinrude was doing what you are describing
it was my carbs the high speed jets were clogged up on two carbs
If you get your hands on a repair manual its actually pretty easy just keep the parts organized I did mine 2 days ago and i cant believe how much i had been paying guys to do something so easy!

took longer to take them off lol

Not a good idea, you have to taken them apart to get them cleaned good.
I found out the hard way.

Fr what it costs it worth a try couldn't hurt there is a chance that it will fix the issues, but from what it sounds like they need to be rebuilt just keep in mind if its starving for fuel its also missing out on necessary oil so dont run it to much like that
