OK, I admitted it, now that thats done. What can someone tell me about the motor? Let's start with the basics, 2 stroke or 4, where to change the oil (Yes I plan on purchasing the service manual and the owners manual at some point but was hoping to "ask those in the know" first. I just bought the boat from the estate of a relative that pasted so surviving person knows nothing about it and unfortunately neither do I. I just put a new battery in it and powered up everything but the motor. Everything is working so far. If you have an excellent online reference please by all means leave it here or email it to me at alsplace@hotmail.com

Hi, Al Can II.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Gotta be a 2 stroke. Do not work on it 'til you have a Service Manual.

Get an owners Manual and a Service Manual as soon as you know the year. We can tell you the year from the Model number.

Please post the model number off the plate on the mount, and tell us when the engine was last run.

Then we can be of some help.

I will move this to Johnson/Evinrude Troubles.

Good luck. :)

125283 should be a 1972, I have the service manual on order. Motor ran a year ago, maybe 18 months. there is about an 1/8 tank of gas in the tank. I know its old so I stuck the fuel line in a tank of chain saw gas I had, gas is getting to the carb but plugs dont look that wet. Can I use starter fluid? What is the mix gas to oil?

The chain saw gas wasn't a good idea. The oil used for 2 stroke outboards is different than the oil used for air cooled 2 stroke engines. This is due to the different temperatues the engines operate at. Mix gas:eek:il at 50:1 using a good TC-W3 oil. By good, I would strongly reccommend oils from Evinrude/Johnson, Mercury, or Yamaha. Don't use starter fluid, it will wash the oil from the bearings and cylinder walls. And since this engine is a 2 stroke and has compression in the crackcase there is a possibility that the starting fluid could burn in the crankcase before even gets to the cylinder

Re: Evinrude 125 ---with my first boat

Do a compression test and a spark test on all 4 cylinders. If that checks out okay then tear down the carbs and give them a good cleaning, I mean good. each and every orifice and passageway. Put them back together with new carb kits. Next install a new impellor and change the lower unit fluid. Mix double oil for the first tank of fuel you run. After the first run check the L/U fluid for water intrusion, may need to reseal if you get water in the L/U. Test running on chainsaw mixture will not hurt a thing as long as the fuel/oil ratio is at 50/1 or less.

See Jimmbo's post above for the mixture. 50:1 or 1 pint of TCW-3 rated oil to 6 Gallons of gas. I would try to find a way to get that old gas out of the fuel tank and start out with fresh gas. After sitting that long, you are probably gonna have to remove and clean the carbs out and use rebuild kits when doing so. When you get the Manual, then you can dig into it. It will need a waterpump, also. If you must use something to try and get it started, use a spray bottle filled with the same pre-mix as you would use in the fuel tank. And NEVER run it without water going to the lower unit, whether it's submerged in a tank of water or using "Muffs"..

Al Can
You might seek the help of a good O/B mechanic. it might save you some headaches in the long run. I replaced the impellor on my '72 125. The housing removal went O/K but one bolt broke requiring some extra attention. Those carbs can be a nightmare unless you have some knowledge in this area.
