My evinrude 140 hp yr 1990 run fine at all rpm range exept it can idle at 800-900 rpm for 4-5 minutes then stop. It can idle continuously if I pump the bulb every 1-2 minutes otherwise the bulb will go soft. What is the cause ?

Could be one of several things (I have 1988s). What comes to mind as possibilities include minor air leak in fuel lines or gas tank connection, weak fuel pump (kind of doubt that if you are able to run WOT though). I would replace all fuel lines, bulb and fuel tank fitting whether they need it or not.

Another possibility, which is really why I'm responding, is that somewhere along the line someone may have removed the thermostats and the engine is running too cold. I had this problem. One mechanic suggested that I also tilt the engines up a bit when the need to idle came up. This is to change the angle of the fuel in the carb.

Today new symptom occured while idling. The no oil alarm went off. The oil tank is full. This may be another evidence to narrow down the problem that I have with poor idle. I think my VRO may not strong enough to pump both fuel and oil during idle rpm but OK with higher rpm. The pulse line has no visible leakage. I also changed the clamps to metal type. My vro may be too old now.
I mixed the fuel and oil in the tank and used an automobil electric fuel pump to feed the carb ( just to test ). The idle problem has gone. The engine could idle forever.
I plan to replace my vro with a regular fuel pump and use pre-mix gas. Anyone knows the model / part number of the pump that I can use with my engine ?

Pannet,

Did you ever clean out your VRO tank?

Chances are you were pumping water into your carbs.

Thank you djohns19.
Today I also take all oil out of the tank ( because I plan not to use it ). There was no water in it.

Hi!
I had exctly the same problem as you, the engine wass running by squezing the bulb frequently but after a while the VRO varning horn indicated no oil. I changed the VRO pump and then it worked fine, the pump is pretty expensive there may be a rebuild kit for it!

Good luck!
