I have bought an Evinrude 140 V4 year 1990 without any manual or spec. This engine is only 15 hrs and look very new inside the hood. I would like to ask anyone who know more about this outboard.

1. What is the different between Evinrude 140 V4 1990 and Johnson 130 V4 2000? I've found that the shape is exactly the same and they're all using carburator.

2. This engine use VRO or fix ratio autolube mixing ?

3. I live in Thailand and the dealer here don't carry much spare parts. I have to wait 45 days for gaskets of the water pump. So I decide to stock some of the spare parts. Which parts should I have in hand ?

4. Which Gas 91 or 95 octane is proper for this engine ?

5. Is there any weak point(s) for this engine which I should give a special care ?

Thanks.

Re: Evinrude 140 V4 Yr 1990 questions

hello, there is very little difference in the two engines you mentioned. mostly some up dated ignition components and fuel system components, but other wise they are basically the same engine .they were pretty reliable motors, but if it has sat for very long and i assume it may have if it only has 15 hrs on it i would be sure i replaced the water pump impeller along with gear oil, rebuild the carbs, replace sparkplugs, inspect or replace all fuel and oil lines, pull spark plugs and spray engine fogger in cylinders, replace fuel pump(vro),grese all fittings, lube all linkage, check all electrical connectors and mix oil in the gas at a 50:1 ratio for the first 10 hours.all of this may not be necessary to get the engine running good but will pay off in a big way down the line ,because the engine will be alot less likely to leave you stranded.as far as parts go depends on how much you want to spend.but atleast a complete water pump kit,set of spark plugs, fuel filters, and fuses(the one on the motor ).if money is no problem i would also go for the lower unit seal kit, carb kits, power pack, plug wires, power head gasket set (not so much to have for rebuilding the motor but so if you have a gasket start leaking then you know you have the one you need),thermostats and possibly a vro. like i said these aren't all necessary but if parts are as hard to get as you say. then your roughly $600.00 investment in parts would almost garuntee you would not be waiting long periods on parts for anything other than a major failure.oh and definetly a spare prop. good luck

Re: Evinrude 140 V4 Yr 1990 questions

Thanks for the answer.

Two weeks ago I ran this engine first time after it was sat for 4-5 years without rebuilding the carb. The fuel tank and line are new. The engine started with in a few stroke and ran smooth + could rev up till full speed. I ran it for half an hour and not using it for two weeks. Today I tried again but the engine didn't start. The spark plug + ignition system was ok. It seems like the fuel cannot get in. After trying to start for half an hour it started but cannot rev up more than 2000 rpm. I check the fuel line, filter and the pump. The fuel did come out from the pump. After running like a turtle for 10-15 minutes, suddenly there was a few cough and the engine could rev up normally. I ran for another 2 hours without any problem.

What is happening to my motor ? Will it happen again ?

Thanks.
