1984 Evinrude 15hp manual start only, no remote controls, etc. model E15RCRM

Pardon duplicate post, Original post got entered, but no pix and I couldn't edit it (got server errors) and no one could even reply.

See solution in next message.

Pawl kept hitting starter, spring on pawl seemed broken, bought new pawl and spring, found first pic to show how spring is supposed to go, but my starter housing/bracket is different. Spring doesn't reach it.

Where is it supposed to hook/go so it keeps the pawl out of the starter when it's not needed/pressed in?

Thanks!

This is pic I found here in iBoats as it should look.

Here's mine, sorry, it was getting late/dark, but you can see the metal part that the spring should rest behind is totally different.

Here's the top view, again, metal part is totally different from top pic as it should look.

YAY, I solved it! Thanks to first photo showing correct layout of the starter.

Apparently, someone, some time in the past, had "fixed" the pull starter and reinstalled it backwards (180 degree off). I'm amazed it worked at all, and it actually worked fine for a long time (year I've had it). NO idea why the pawl worked/didn't catch all the time when I got it, but I probably didn't really need to replace it (too late now... :) Also explains why the rope would break often right behind the cowl where it rubbed against the non-curved metal part it was supposed to rub against. It was rubbing on the part that's supposed to hold the pawl spring, vs. the rounded part on the opposite side.

So I just removed the bolt holding the starter, and with some difficulty, got it turned around, and bolted back in. Put the spring in it's correct place and I'm all set!

Thanks all!

I seem to have the same problem,(Pawl spring has come loose) but your original thread has no photos. Do you have any photos to show how the spring should be installed?
