I have an Evinrude 150 anniversary edition (I think 1984).It cranks ok on land with the water hose but won't even fire in the water.I think water is being pulled into it somewhere and getting into my fuel or killing my spark. It turns over great. When I run it with the water hose there is water coming out of a hole directly over the right side spark plugs and draining down on them.Is this normal? There is also a little water comin out of certain parts of the lower unit that don't look normal.

The hole above my spark plugs with water coming out is one of my thermostats. Before I go to the lake I always make sure it will crank, but as soon as I put it in the water at the lake it won't start. It does turn over great. When I get it back home it starts after a few tries. This has happened three times at two different boat ramps.I even let it sit in the water at the pier for an hour and tried it again but no difference.I gave up on advice and went ahead and put it in the shop.I hope they can find something but they had a dumb look on their face when I explained it to them.

welcome, is this motor new to you? it sound like the taletell hose has come of the fitting, and spraying under the cowl. it also sounds like you idle speed stop screw is set too low. does water come out of the hole in the block when running in the driveway?

Under that plate that's leaking (plate has a raised center with a hole in the middle) is a pop off valve. The diaphram either has a hole in it or the diaphram is out of the seat. Either way it's a very easy fix, no big deal.

The difference between starting your motor at home or in the water is the backpressure in the exhaust. Most likely all you need is to have the carbs cleaned.

The bad news is that if you've told the shop to look for water intrusion, that's probably all they'll do.

Thanks guys for your responses. The shop said I had one bad power pack,a hole in one thermostat, they cleaned my carbs, and checked my compression(it was 90+ on all).At the time of this message I still haven't picked it up from the shop and tried it for myself but I'm hopeful the problem is solved.
