I am rebuilding an Evinrude 150 1987 - 1990 and had a questions regarding Carbs. I have changed the heads to a set of 1985 XP heads. I have 2 sets of carbs with different throat dia 1 1/4 (0332167) and 1 5/16 (0431795) Each Set is for a V6 Evinrude. The 1 1/4 carbs have 33, 29, 56C jets the 1 5/16 carbs have 38, 30, 65C. From most of the parts manuals I have looked at the 1 1/4 carb looks to be the most common jet sizes. The parts manual doesn't list Throat sizes. Which carb set would give me the best performance? Would I get better performance if I put the 33, 29, 56C jets in the 1 5/16 throat carbs? Also, I haven't been able to find the 322167 carbs in the BRP Part Catalogs. Does anyone know what model Evinrude they came off of?

Re: Evinrude 150 Carbs - Throat Dia

Welcome!!

Either set will work and have different characteristics. Generally speaking, the larger throat carbs will give more top end and use more fuel but less response especially on the bottom end. The smaller carbs will have better response and burn less but less top end. This all starts to come into play after about 6500 or so. If you're not turning over 6000, the 1 1/4" carbs will probably give the best overall response.

OMC played around with a lot of carb sizes on crossflows and different configurations with the same throat size. Everything from 1" to 1 3/8" throats.

Keep the jetting stock for whatever carb you use. Each carb is calibrated for the air moving thru it, not what horsepower motor it's on. You may have to play with idle jetting because todays fuel is different than what we had when those carbs were designed but that's about it. Once you get over 6500 you may have to change some jets.

That year 150 was made in two flavors, the standard 150, rated at 150 and then the XP 150. The XP models were the higher performance 150 engines that put out just under 165 hp. They used the 1 5/16" carbs. You can try both carb sets-my guess is that you will like the large bore carbs better.

i have one of those 150 carbs , and it has some extra mid range jets where as mine has only a fixed low #30 and a fixed #61 for a main, although i would have to change throttle shafts for them to align with cam follower .

does anyone know if having the mid range jets will help her run smoother at idle? if they do i could pick up the other one from a local used parts omc dealer ..this 135,bubble back,1975 sure isnt the best idleing outboard i ever had,,lol..thansk, dz titusville florida
