Just rebuilt the carbs on my (E150GLECD) 1998, 150hp. It runs much better, but could use some adjustment. Just wondering if there were any tricks to setting the idle jets. The manual says set them at 5 turns out and then to lean it out (1/8 turn at a time) till it begins to sneeze then richen it up until you get an increase in RPMs, then repeat for each carb. I cant say that I am noticing much difference even when they are completely closed. Is the RPM difference subtle enough that I should hook up a digital tach? I did not do a link and sync because I did not remove the throttle body on either side. I blew out the little holes with compressed air and cleaned them with a small wire. Just wondered if anyone had any experience or tricks for this. I read the Joe Reeves sticky but still couldnt seem to get it right. Thanks

Re: Evinrude 150 Carburator Adjustment - Help?

You do realize you adjusting IDLE MIXTURE and not IDLE SPEED. The two are related so if the engine is idling faster than spec it needs to be slowed down, then mixture adjusted, then idle speed adjusted again and the process repeated. The more cylinders and engine has the less noticeable adjustment of an individual mixture screw will be. So you need to pay very close attention to not only the rpm but the "tone" of the engine. My technique is to turn the screw in until the engine begins to bog -- then note the position of the screw. Back the screw out until it begins to change tone again. Happiness will be somewhere between the two rich/lean settings. For best throttle pickup I tend to adjust a tad rich.
