Re: Evinrude 150 hp gas hog ?

I have same similar boat and problem. I have an 88 Stratus with Evinrude 150HP XL motor. A problem that I am having is not only high gas consumption but battery not charging. I pull the battery out and fully charge it. I put it back in and a few hours into day battery drains and doesn't charge. Tried every test imaginable even tested battery for dead cells. All good. bad Stator ? Do you have any info on this or know anyone who could.

DHadley is right, save a few bucks and run what is recommended-87.

The 150 is NEVER going to be miserly when it comes to fuel.

Chipmunk must be talking about a four stroke. My last DT-140 (2 stroke) would burn 10 gallons of gas a day--idling. And it wouldn't outrun most 115's.

I made a post recently asking about fuel milage. I sure mine is much worse than yours. It's an 85 Johnson 150. I have heard that it is the true mama sow of the gas hogs!

Any motor improperly set up will be a gas hog compared to those set up correctly.

Just a thought!

the 140 i was refering to is a four stroke .. and i will out run any 150... especially since they have to stop at the gas pump all the time..

Mike, rule of thumb for 2C OB's: HP, move decimal 1 place to left= GPH (@ WOT). If you ran your motor at or close to WOT, 15 GPH is about right. Reducing power to 3500-4000 RPM saves a lot of fuel.

You guys are on the right track. My 71 Johnson 125 will burn about 10-12 GPH at wide open throttle. If you back off and keep the R's below 4000 it drops almost by half. Problem is its tooooo boring at that speed! :D
