Hello Board;
I'm looking for info on the Evinrude 150 HP 1988 Model #E150STLCCA. Looking for specs for the engine, bore, stroke, con-rod center to center length, max RPM, carb specs, comp ratio, reed valves, etc.
A friend of mine has asked me to look into any modifications that can be done to improve overall power. I know 2-strokes but I do not know outboards. Any help will be very appreciated. Any web sites to visit?
Thanks

I can't help you much with the specs, but you asked what could be done to boost performance. You could change-out the reed box with Boyesen Reeds. These are a carbon fiber reed set that adds lots of power to the whole power curve. They are made for most OB motors.

------------------
Time to change my tagline

Been there, done that. Easy motor to modify. First of all you must define your useage. What type of boat? What is your present and max target RPM? Target and present speed? What type of fuel are you willing to run? Internal mods or external only? Boyesen reeds are indeed the first change. Part number 164. Just make sure the motor does not "spit" at idle. That's the only thing that will kill the Boyesen reeds. Remember, the carbs are jetted for 1988 fuel. We haven't had that fuel since late 89.
Good luck!

Re: Evinrude 150 V6 88

Thanks for the replys.

Corm: Thanks for the Land&Sea web site.

12Footer: Thanks for the info on Boyesen reeds.

Dhadley: Thanks for the part # for the reeds. What I'm looking for is more acceleration. The engine is stock with a 14 1/4 X 21 prop. The boat is a 89 Checkmate 22.5'. Don't know what the present RPM or speed is because the gages are broken. They are on the replacement list. I don't know what to tell you about targeted RPM or speed because I don't know enough about the engine yet. Gas is 92-93 octane. I'm willing to do both internal and external mods. I do my own porting and machining. A big bore kit is not out of the question but I'd like to try some lesser mods first. If I tear it down for porting I'll look into a big bore kit at that time. I understand that changing the prop will give me more acceleration with a cost to top end and I'll be looking into that also, so I'd appreciate any recomendations. I understand the engine is a little small for the boat but that's what I got to work with. Porting and head mod specs would be nice also. What mods did you find to help?
Thanks
JFN

Re: Evinrude 150 V6 88

A 21 is a pretty stiff prop for your boat. My guess is that you aren't turning enough RPM's to start with. Don't change the prop yet. Fix the tach first. You need to establish the baseline first. You may be able to increase the x dimension and get a better hole shot and more top end RPM's which will increase speed. I assume you have milled the heads thereby creating the need for hi test fuel. What plugs are you using? Fix the tach and get a GPS speed reading and we can calculate propeller slip. Is the motor mounted on the transome or on a bracket? What brand prop? Has it been reworked?

Dhadley:
I figured the prop was pretty tall. I don't know what plugs he runs, I'll have to find out. The motor is off the boat and sitting on a stand right now so I can't get a RPM or speed reading. I'll have to find out what prop he has. The heads have not been touched yet, the motor is stock. From what I know the prop has not been reworked. I'll have to find out how he has the motor mounted.
If you want to e-mail me off the board the address is JFN@shol.com
I'll post the info later tonight.
Thanks
JFN

Great! Glad it's still stock. Let's get a baseline on the deal and go from there. When are you going to run it again?

Dhadley
The boat is getting worked on (paint job) so it will be a while before running it. I understand about getting a baseline but we figured since it wss going to be down for a while this would be the time to do some mods. The speed run will be a timed run thru a measured length course using a stopwatch. Don't have any radar gun available. But like I said it'll be a while, (month?). What do you think?
JFN

You can't know where you are going til you know where you are. The first rule in set up is to make the most out of what you got and then make one change at a time.
I can't begin to tell you how many times I have seen guys out trick themselves. Stick to the basics. It always pays off in the long run.

Re: Evinrude 150 V6 88

Believe me I know what your saying. The plugs are Champion QL77JC4, the motor is bolted to the transome, the only thing on the prop is part# 391202. He also told me he had a stainless prop 14 1/2 X 20 called a Raker part# 394753. I also understand that this project will take some time to complete, if there is ever a completion. There have to be some basics that can be done while the engine is down.

Re: Evinrude 150 V6 88

The only thing I would do now would be the Boyesen reeds. What's the compression on the motor?

Re: Evinrude 150 V6 88

I was going to take a compression test later this week. I'll look into the reeds tomorrow. Since this is a new type motor for me to work on what service manual do you recommend. What type of tack and speedometer do you recommend and where do you recommend purchasing them?

Any OMC tach is good. The digital is one of the most acurate around. Use a GPS for speed.
Check with your local OMC (Bombardier) dealer for pricing and service manual. Also Clymer at www.intertecbooks.com for service manuals.
