Evinrude 150 VRO Alarming

I have a 1990 rude 150. It has the 3-wire vro2. I started getting an intermittent beep every 30 or 40 seconds while I had her out this morning. I put her on the trailer and took her to the house because I didn?t want to damage the motor. From what I have gathered this is a low oil warning. I wasn?t to worried about the motor not getting lubed (it still smokes), so I ran it in the driveway and disconnected the tank float switch. It still beeped (the tank was full anyway). I put that back and disconnected the 3-wire pin connector at the vro. It stopped. Does this mean vro is starting to fail? Should I rebuild or replace it? Or, could this be a oil line restriction? Also, can anyone help me out on what the different alarm tones indicate? I have read conflicting posts about this.

Thanks in advance for any info!

low oil alarm is a beep every 30 seconds. beep......................beep...................

no oil alarm is a beep every 1/2 second or so.beep, beep, beep

overheat alarm is a constant beep.beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

you could have an air leak in oil line, pump is not rebuildable, you could just unplug as you did, and run premixed fuel. 50-1 and cut and plug oil line.

Re: Evinrude 150 VRO Alarming

After a brew or two and further inspection of the pump I found what I believe to be the $370 culprit. On the end of the VRO where the electronics are located there is the little circuit board looking device that is embedded into a semi clear resin material. This fits inside the plastic pump housing. The resin has separated from the housing, when I push on the resin I can see liquid seeping trough. My guess is that this is where my air is entering. I am wondering if I can seal this back up and still use it. It seems like I may have read that somebody used JB weld? Anybody had any luck with this? Thoughts?

Also, this is the most informative information / explanation of the vro that I have read yet.

i would not trust my motor to a leaking oil pump. i would temporarily go to premix as mentioned above, or replace with an OMS, pump.

Even epoxy does not stick to oily parts. Also smooth plastic needs to sanded just a little to give the adhesive some 'tooth' to hold onto.

Clean and rinse the surfaces again with a fast drying solvent to ensure there is NO possibility of any oil wicking up out of the separation to contaminate your adhesive.

Run the pre-mixed fuel til you are SURE it is fixed.

Re: Evinrude 150 VRO Alarming

I have decided to go with a new VRO pump. I am not interested in mixing fuel and I like the idea that the pump is designed to keep the ratio of the mix correct for the engine load. I am going to service the oil tank, filter, and oil line as well as the fuel filter at the same time. After completing all this I figure the fuel end of my motor should be squared away. (1)What should I use to clean and flush the oil tank and line? (2) After installing the new vro, can I prime the oil line before connecting it to the vro oil inlet keeping the clear plastic site glass empty and then run the motor on a premixed tank until I see that the new pump is pumping oil trough the site glass or is it bad for the oil side of the vro to pump dry or unprimed on startup? I am just looking for reassurance that the oil is mixing after the new installation. What is the correct way to do that? I am assuming that it is better to oil the motor twice rather than not at all! I am just not sure how long I should give the new vro to start pumping the oil. I am convinced that it is a good pump as the one I have looks to be original and as it has started to fail it did what it was designed to do and gave me an alarm before damaging my motor. (3) My failing vro is a 3 wire pump. Should I go back with a 3 wire or try to upgrade it or what? As I understand it there is a four wire pump that came after this one.

The OMS pump upgrade kit #5007423 includes the wiring to upgrade from 3 wire to 4.

Be sure to replace the oil filter in the oil tank.
