Hi
Is there a way to remove the cylinder head from a 1984 Evinrude 15 without first removing the powerhead?

The problem bolt is the lowest one on the left as you look at the head. I've tried removing two rear mounting bolts, (one on each side), but the pan doesn't drop. I only need about an inch! So frustrating to think I might have to remove the powerhead just to put a helicoil in the bottom plug hole!

Thanks in advance.
Steve

I use a 6pt swivel socket. you may also try lossening the front cowl mounts. I have done many head gaskets on that motor style and have not pulled a powerhead yet. but the next one is always coming.

On some of these motors I've also removed the rear motor cover latch for a bit more room.

Can this head receive a helicoil? I always thought no because of the angle of the plug.

DHP

Re: Evinrude 15hp cylinder head removal.

I modified two helecoil taps to do these heads as a regular tap won't go in as DHP posted. The angle won't let a standard tap go all the way in. So I start with a regular tap to get it going. I cut about half of the lead tap end off another tap to get it in further. On the last tap, the lead end is cut all the way off, I finish up with this. Has worked well for me.

But the hard part is getting the head off. You can get to the lower head bolts with a long skinny box end. Pull and replace the head with the head bolts laying in the lower holes. As rodbolt said, a swivel socket works good.

Just came in from doing the job, so I didn't benefit from all the advice posted!

I couldn't get the head off without taking the powerhead off. Even with all three mounting bolts removed, the cowling didn't move enough, and the bottom left bolt was a dog! I also found out pretty soon that the helicoil tap doesn't go all the way in! A bit of lateral thinking, cursing and another tap soon got it done though ;o)

At least I was able to check the water tube grommet while the powerhead was off!

Thanks
Steve
