Howdy, Enn.

Age, more than use, wears out impellers by making them brittle.

I would change the impeller at least each 2 years.

Good luck. :)

Re: Evinrude 15hp

Enn
I can't disagree with JB as almost everyone will tell you the same, every 2 Years.

However I have a 1975 Johnson 15 HP that in it first few years ran a lot in shallow water and mud frogging. I changed water pump in 1981 and put in a chrome or stainless pump kit. Last year I was going to change again as had lower unit off to change from a 15 inch shaft to 20 inch shaft. When got ready to do it I took impeller out and could find no wear at all. The tips were all perfect and could find no cracking in any blade. Only thing I found at all was impeller did not go all the way out straight when out of cup. Still fills the cup with plenty of spring so I put it back in. Pumps plenty of water at low speed as well as High speed. My 1980 OMC I/O has been changed twice when other work was done but all the old parts look fine.

I never start motor with out water going to pump. Today I never run either motor in mud or sand just normal River, Lake, and Sea Water. I do not change my car belts every two year either but do change timing belt every 100,000 miles.
