I am trying to take this motor apart to see if it is worth rebuilding. I need tips on removing the plate that covers the crank. It is on the front of the motor which the carbs bolt to. This is my first teardown and I wanted to see if it was worth anything before I bought a manual for it. Any help is appreciated.

Is the powerhead off the mid section?

No. I was just tearing it down piece by piece. Do I need to remove the powerhead from the mid-section to get the plate off?

It's not just a plate, it's actually the front half of the block. Once you get the powerhead on the bench you can remove the ignition & electrical as (basically) one unit. I'll pull the starter seperately just because it's easier but pretty much everything else can come off as a unit.

Then the carbs, then the intake. The front half has bolts in the front, top and bottom. Then the rod caps, then the crank comes out. Then I pull the head if it's not off already and slide the pistons out. Then the other side. Once you get the exhaust plates and by-pass covers off it should be ready to go to the machine shop.

Nothing real difficult, nice project.

Thanks a bunch. That sums it up nicely.

Do you know of any good sources of parts for this engine?

I am definitely going to need a crank because the one on it snapped smooth off right below the flywheel. This is the main reason for tearing it down. I am trying to figure out how in the world that happened. If nothing is really wrong inside then I am clueless.

Must be a mid 90's motor. e saw some of that about that time. The official word from OMC was a harmonic imbalance around 6200. They said to go above that or stay below, just don't spend a lot of time at 6200. Make up your own mind if you buy into that or not.

Another scenario is that if the #1 rod journal has been repaired. Seemed to end up broken like that sometimes.

There are lots of good places for used parts like cranks - I trust the guys at Superior Marine (800-338-9281). For powerhead parts and machine work I'd suggest the Guys at Mar Fab or Flagship.

It is actually a 1980 model year.

Thanks for the parts references.

Does anyone know the procedure for removing the powerhead? I thought I had everything loose but it isn't coming off. Are there hidden bolts or pins or some kind of trick to it?

Do you have the bolt & nut off under each side in the front (1 bolt, 1 stud w/nut)? Nuts off the rear? Shift disconnected? Is it moving at all?

I've had good luck getting old crossflow parts from Boatrecyclers of Wilmington. Purchased a crossflow crank from them a few years ago. Good folks. They advertise a lot on ebay. I am sure you can google them on the web too.

Thanks for the info. Managed to get it off yesterday and everything looks pretty good.

Now it is time to buy a manual. Any opinions on the best book to buy for a rebuild? I also need a good source for gaskets and all of that good stuff. The iboats store didn't have much in stock for my motor.

OE manual. You can get everything you need from Pro Marine (800-621-7761).

Thanks. You have been a big help.

There will probably be more questions popping up once I get all of the parts in. Just a warning.Nothing like a newb with a wrench! :D

Re: Evinrude 175 Disassembly ???'s

I've found new OEM parts from http://bestboatparts.com. They often have even the wierd little clips and oddball parts available. (Less than retail and often better pricing than ebay)

I also use iboats when I can for the more common parts. They usually have good parts and they host this board so I support them too.
