Evinrude 175 dual steering

This may seem silly but it would appear to me that the previous owner of my boat installed the steering backwards. It has a new dual cable system and when I turn the wheel to the port side the front of the motor turns to the same side making the back of the propeller move to the starboard side thus turning the boat the wrong way.

Looking at the system it has dual cables connected at the engine and under the helm they connect to the bottom of the steering assembly. In the top of the steering assembly there are 2 empty tubes I assume for the extra cable to come through when turning. It would appear to me that I need to remove the cables from the lower holes and feed them into the upper holes and that should reverse the steering?

Do I need to disconnect the cables from the engine side before trying to remove them from the helm? How do I get them out of the steering gear at the helm? It looks like there is a bolt holding them in, should I just remove the bolt and crank on the wheel until they come out? How do you get them started ? Just push them in and start turning the wheel again?

Thanks for your time.

With a dual cable steering setup, the slack adjustment between the two cables is usually on the engine end. I'd disconnect them there while you work on the other helm end. You should be able to disconnect both cables at the helm end and feed them through the other holes that you mentioned. Once you get them both started at the same time, turning the wheel will thread them back into the gearbox. You will need to feed them both through together to insure they align properly, then rebolt them in place. Make final (slack) adjustments on the engine end.
