I have a 1996 175 Evinrude. The engine stalls after a few minutes of running. I noticed I have to prime the fuel again after it dies out. I have disconnected the VRO pump because of too much oil going into engine causing it to smoke too much. I mixed the oil with the fuel. The plugs are black and I just replaced them. Any suggestions would be a great help.

Sounds like it is time to rebuild the carbs if you have them. I usually just reply to small OMC outboard questions because those are the ones I know. sounds like a float is sticking and flooding out a cylinder. Also your primer bulb going soft could mean an air leak somewhere in the line/tank or a bad fuel pump.

forgot to ask. Does it run good at top end? Might have a bad ignition coil or powerpack and not firing on a cylinder. Check for spark on all cylinders before you do anything else.

Thanks for the info. I will check the carb and see if the plugs are have a spark on them.

I will check the cylinders to see if they have spark.

when the engine starts it runs for about 2 minutes and then it starts to sputter and when I give it gas it dies.I then have to prime the bulb to start it again.

Sounds like you either have an air leak in your fuel line or you need to rebuild your fuel pump as your engine is running out of fuel. It will burn the fuel you pump into the bowl but cannot refill because it will lose it's prime or you fuel pump is not pulling it in. Check for air leaks in your fuel line where it comes out of the tank, around your primer bulb, and where it connects to the engine first. If they are fine then it is probably your fuel pump.
