Hey guys... brought my boat to a mechanic and he told me i needed a new stator... its a 1987 evinrude 175... my buddy had a new stator he never put in his old motor so we gave it a shot... he had a 1990 johnson 175..

we gave it a shot.. im getting spark to all cylinders now ( i was only getting spark to port side before), but the motor now idles like its cammed.. big looping so to speak.. any ideas of what this can be? it dosent do it all the time, just randomly will come and go. any thoughts?

cammed? , we need a race car tech.

The difference in the stator might be very minor, or they might not be.
They're probably both 35 amp.

You can look up the part numbers and compare at evinrude.com

I looked up both motors based on your information given.

The stator assy. are different in those two motors. What is different about them I have no idea. The model numbers are different. 1990 is 583710 and the 1987 is 583050.

Me personally I would never do that to start with. Just my opinion.
Seens how it all connects to the Power Pack it could be sending cross signals to it. Causing your problem.

The ignition systems changed between those years. When OMC went with the single power pack, they put quickstart into the pack logic. On those newer engines, the magnetic timer ring in the center of the flywheel changed location. The flywheels will not interchange. The timer bases are different part numbers also, due to that reason. Possible the stators are also not interchangeable. One of the experts on the board may know the exact answer on the stator.

thanks for the help.. yea we figured since he had it and was never gona use it, and i needed one to give it a try.. it did only have a single large plug coming off of it, instead of 2 small plugs.. we we cut that off, cut the 2 plugs off the original stator, and matched them up with solid brown to solid brown, brown striped to brown striped.. hooked the 2 grounds up.. and eliminated the 2 red wires coming out the front.. i guess what ill do is an ohm test coming off each side.. see if im getting where im sopposed to be at 200 ohms.. other than that is there any difference?
