I have a pair of 1996 Evinrude Ocean Pro's, 175 HP, on my 24' Boston Whaler Outrage. The starboard motor shuts down mysteriously at a variety of rpms; will always restart. The motors run perfectly otherwise. Max RPM is 5500 each. This problem started late last year and continues this year. I have checked out fuel supply to excess (new lines, filters, bulbs). I've even check the filter at the motor. I'm inclined to think electrical at this point, :) as if a wire to the ignition is shorting or something. I have even put in two new ignition switches without the copper terminals (which I unsderstood were bad). Any thoughts?

I have a buddy who has a 18 ft Glastron with a single 175 Rude on it. The same thing happened to him last summer. It would die a various RPM's and nearly threw him out of the boat when dropping off a skier and it cut off. it would always start back up. It ended up being a power pack.

Hope this may help you

Deerdog

check the black wire with the yellow tracer that comes out the power pack and goes to the eng wire harness conector the motor has the most potential for a wire to be pinched or wore thru from vibration after inspecting this wire back to the ign sw, change the power pack

my little 50 hp johnson was cutting out like that, and would always restart. Then it activated the SLOW one time. Changed the power pack.

I'll give the power pack a try. I just happen to have an old one I took off the port motor for other reasons (the battery wasn't charging properly). The power pack did not solve the problem. I left the new one in place and put the old one in a box. I'll give it a try. Not a hard job. A quick question: by power pack do you mean Regulator/Rectitifier? This I have! Thanks Walt

The power pack is basically the main brain for the entire motor.

It's a black box with about 5 wire harnesses and the ignition leads going to the coils.

If you need one of these, I imagine it will run ya a pretty penny. The one for my 96' Johnson 50 was $206.

Thanks again; :p I'm starting to get on the same page as you guys...I may for starters swith power packs from one motor to the other. If this is the problem I'll get a new power pack. Sure sounds like the problem. Will keep you posted. Thanks, Walt

I hope you all read this...BINGO, right on the money, it was the Power Pack. I installed this morning and the motor ran perfect. Not a big deal to install, but a little fussy. Thanks again guys you made my week. :)
