A couple questions from a first time outboard motor owner:
I just picked up a 1957 Evinrude 7.5 (sn=7522-15230). It did not come with a gas tank, and I understand that this motor will need a special dual line tank. Are these available or are there conversion kits so that I can use a standard external tank? Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated...
Also, the mixture (according to the instructions on the inside of the case) say to use a 16:1 ratio "one half pint to every one gallon gas". Is this correct still in today's world?
Thanks in advance...!
-Bryan

Starting out with an oldie but goodie eh? Dual hose tanks are just about impossible to find anymore. You can convert to a single tank, hose, and fuel pump. Oil mixture is 50:1......1 pint per 6 gallons.

boatpartstore com/boatparts/default.asp

Thanks for the quick reply...
What is involved in getting a fuel pump system installed on this motor? Is it a costly ordeal? Something that anyone can do themselves? Any specific parts I should look for?

Thanks again!
Bryan

Bleighty, those tanks come up on ebay all the time in various condition. I am not sure where to get a fuel pump, but twin City Outboards may have one or they may have a tank. They do have the tank connectors.
twincityoutboard.com/

Do not use 50:1 mixture. The bearings in that unit will go in short order. Use 24:1 or 32:1 good quality TCW3 rated oil.

I have a '57 7.5 also. Nice motor. Definitely check the coils for cracks check, and replace the impeller. The impeller is available from either your NAPA store or Evinrude dealer. To replace the impeller, you will need to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift lever so you wiil need the powerhead gasket also. You may want to have them order a drive shaft seal and o-ring. A service manual will make this easier. They are available from this site (Link in lower left corner) or a copy of the original is available from the Ken Cook Company.
ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/index.cfm?fuseaction=boats.main&manufactor=evinrude

I scanned in the original owners manaul for this model and can email a copy to you if you would like.

A good place to find helpful information on this motor and other old motors is The Anitque Outboard Motor Club. Here is the link
http://www.aomci.org

They also have a webervetise section on their site where you can put a want add. Good Luck

hello.
Scoop has the right scoop if you want your engine to last!!!
If you are a beginner with little technological experience, the best investment you can make is buying a Seloc book for your engine type and year.
The book is written for total beginners and it takes you by the hand, enabling you to get the job done.
It has a section about pressure tanks and their maintenance and it also explains how to install a fuel pump on your engine.

Scoop / Rolmops..thanks for the info!

I am hoping I did not get myself into something that will need too much maintenance. When it comes to motors, I am quite ignorant...but willing to learn. I took apart, cleaned and reconstructed a lawn mower once...but that was over a decade ago!! yikes!

Anything you can email me about the engine would be great!
Send to bleighty@paymentech.com

Re: Evinrude - 1957 7.5hp - Fuel system problems and questions

Hi Bryan,
Definitely keep the oil on the rich side. Not necessary to run it on the 16:1 mix as per original, but do try to keep it around the 24:1. I'm not comfortable with 32:1, but some folks run it. I've got a pile of holed blocks for those 7.5s and another pile of burned crankshafts, all due to lack of oil.
Tanks aren't that hard to find. They turn up on eBay all the time, generally for $30-$50. Rebuild kits are available for the tanks and new hose is available. Great little motors! Have fun!
- Scott

This is important enough to bear hearing again: don't run less than a 24:1 mixture in this old motor. I burned one up and would hate for you to do the same.

Re: Evinrude - 1957 7.5hp - Fuel system problems and questions

Thanks for all the help!

I found a guy here in the Tampa area with a HUGE collection of pre-1960 evinrudes. He took a quick look at the motor today and gave it thumbs up. I am having him go through it more completely and he even has a 4 gallon compression tank (completely rebuilt) to sell me!!
I will be on the water in no time!

Thanks again!

Bleighty, The owner's manual should be in your email box. Let me know if it didn't get through correctly.
