Evinrude 1957 and 1961 18hp fastwin

I have a 1957 18 horse that the powerhead is locked up on and I just picked up a 1961 18 horse that has a good powerhead and runs but has no reverse it is stuck in forward. How interchangable are the parts on these two models?

Unfortunately, these are not interchangable. The 61 model has a thermostat set up and the 57 does not. The cooling system is a bit of a different set up.

Have ou tried using penetrating oil in the 57 and have you taken the gearcase apart on the other one to find out why its stuck in forward?

I would fix both of them! Unstick the '57 and fix the lower end on the '61! Worse comes to worst, stick the gearfoot from the '57 on the '61...

The '57 may need a complete rebuild, but what have you got to lose by tearing it apart and seeing what it needs? Nothing!
