Evinrude 1986 15 hp start switch location?

My motor has already installed the remote steering and remote throttle / shift.
I am going to convert to electric start but can't figure out where the start switch goes. I saw some references on the web that the switch goes on the lower part of the housing, on the left side, near the shift lever. However, that is where my kill switch is.

The other pre-made hole in the front of the motor, where the tiller arm normally goes, is filled with the throttle cable.

Anybody know where the start switch is supposed to go?

The motor is E15RLCDE.

Thanks.

Start switch.......As in Key switch? That should be mounted in your remote controls panel.

Looking at the parts diagram for the start button in the electric start kit for your 1986 motor, here's where it should be installed:

Unless you're also installing a remote start kit ... then there's a key switch as crxess suggested

Thanks for responding crxess and bankerjohn.

bankerjohn, a picture is worth 1000 words. Thanks for uploading.

In my current setup, there is a steering bracket that blocks the hole you mentioned.

I have been studying the parts diagrams online.

It seems that the start switch is supposed to go on the steering bracket, facing the gear lever side of the motor. However, this is where my kill switch is. The wires to the kill switch pass through the hole in your picture (#34) that you indicated was for the start switch.

If I mount the start switch there, where do I mount the kill switch? The parts diagram seems to show the kill switch as facing the front of the motor on the gear lever side. But I can't find a spare hole.

I will think about a remote start / stop switch. But, this seems a little strange to me since I cannot make a remote choke, so I will still need to be by the motor during the start and initial running.

Thanks again for responding.

I found a partial answer.

It looks like the remote steering was *supposed* to have an additional bracket upon which the stop switch is mounted, with the start switch mounted on the main steering bracket. Connections for AC lighting would also be made on this additional bracket.

I don't have the additional bracket so I will have to figure out something else for mounting the stop switch.

I'm a bit confused by your comments about the current location of your kill switch ... in this diagram, the switch is located at the end of the tiller arm:

Re: Evinrude 1986 15 hp start switch location?

I have remote steering / throttle / shift so no more tiller arm.

As I examine the parts diagrams, it looks like the kill switch moves around depending on what options are installed.

I have a home-installed (by previous owner) remote control system so I think he put the kill switch where the start switch is supposed to go, on the side of the steering bracket.

It looks like the safest installation would be for me to put the kill switch, with a lanyard, on the console next to the wheel. If I fall off the boat, the motor will stop.

I agree ... wouldn't do much good on the engine if you're "up front" ... unless you had a really long lanyard :D

Re: Evinrude 1986 15 hp start switch location?

Hello,

Newbie here--I have a 1986 15HP Johnson tiller like the pic below, any chance someone can tell me what item number 7 in the pic below is? I have not used my motor in several years but I have a gap between item 6 and item 17 that looks more like a piece missing that would be item 7.

Also in case I need to disassemble how does the rubber grip item 5 come off?

I did purchase a Johnson service manual but this doesn't seem to be covered in that.

Anyone know where this pic came from as I would be interested in purchasing the book it came from if possible.

Thanks
Dan
