I changed the oil in my lower unit today. I?ve used it for two seasons with out changing it (my first boat). I?ve never suspected a problem with it but believe in preventive maintenance. I noticed a very fine metallic powder on the top vent plug magnet. There were no slithers or flakes (I know that would be bad!). Is it normal to have some fine metal in there? It was all on the top vent plug. My plan is to run it a few times and change it again checking for anymore metal.

When I put it on a paper towel it was about the size of a dime. I was concerned at first because when magnetized it looked like flakes. But when I got it off the magnetic screw it was a very fine powder (reminded me of aniti-seize paste). The oil was dark brown. I think it had been in there for a while. I will change it again after a few uses to put my mind at ease.

Some metal powder is normal, chips are not good.
Treat it to new seals on the drain screws too.
