Joe,
your reply to my post previously,,
"having the outer spring end hooked over the retaining pin."

I've put the spring back together several times, the spring does not stay hooked. Is the retaining pin the molded pin on the cover housing? When i put the spring in, it fits into space with a raised ridge around it. at one spot, the ridge has a slot. This seems to be the place to hook since it allows the spring to fit flat inside the housing but it does not stay put. The molded pin a referenced is closer to the outlet for the rope. It seems to stay better there but the spring rides over the edge of the raided ridge somewhat.

I can get it to recoil many times with the cover off the engine. When i put the cover on and replace the 4 bolts and tighten down, it wants to hang up again.

any thoughts?

Isn't there a round steel pin pressed into the cover housing? The eyelet in the spring end should fit over it.
