Evinrude 200 Broken Drive Shaft

I bought a lower unit for a 200 HP Evinrude 1997 that had been "rebuilt". UPS brings it and when I turn the drive shaft it sounded a little rough. Dig into it and find out the drive shaft is broken at the pinion gear. I am trying to get the pinion gear out but have nothing to keep the inch I have left of the drive shaft from turning. I did some research and read where I can put it in forward gear, hold the 7/8 wrench on the nut and turn the prop shaft to get the nut free. Long story short - can anyone tell me the part number of the prop spline wrench I need? I tried just turning it with a prop but did not have any luck.

Try a heavy pipe wrench on a non-critical area of the prop shaft. I've used this trick before and had good luck.

Thanks. The guy I bought it from bought it being told it had been rebuilt. He did the right thing and we came to an agreement on a fair price. Now all I have to do is get the dang drive shaft out. It was a 25" any way and I needed to put my 20" shaft in. Only concern with using a pipe wrench on the prop shaft is leaving a bur to get caught on the seal or something. Thanks again for the help and I will try a pipe wrench tomorrow.

One other question. I shift it into forward and then turn the prop shaft which direction? I know that seems like a silly question but I just don't want to be tightening it even more.

I would be wary of rebuilding as 2 things snap a DS at pinion....1),low oil cause pinion brg failure and 2)impact. Also I will not rebuild a unit unless I check the gearcase alignment as they tweek out of shape.I have thrown away cases that look new due to warpage and dealer shpuld have this tool...

I have another casing that is fine. I just needed the forward gear and the pinion gear. My next question/problem is.............My manual says that the shifting unit should come out with the prop shaft. That did not happen on either of the three units I took apart. Am I doing something wrong? It would sure be easier to put the needle bearings in if it were out. Thanks again in advance.
