I took My 14' Lund powered by a 1985 20HP Evinrude out for some lake Trout fishing today and after 5 hours of trolling and 45 minites of running at top speed the tank was sucked dry. I had to tip the 5 gallon metal tank, which was full to start, on its corner to make it back to the launch at 1/2 mile away.

Can any one tell me if this is reasonable fuel consumption or is there something I can do to better it?

Thanks

Re: Evinrude 20HP Fuel Consumption

Depends on the load in the boat, the prop, engine's overall condition, water conditions, trolling speed, etc...

It does sound a little high.
I would recommend a new set of plugs and a carb overhaul(to ensure it's not running rich), and a synch and link check. If everything checks out then you at least know you've done what you can to help.

Re: Evinrude 20HP Fuel Consumption

My 25hp johnny seems to use more than it's fair share of fuel too but it runs nice. From the guys here you should burn around 10% of your horsepower in fuel per hour. That you be about 2 gallons for you. This is running just back from WFO at a cruising speed. Rabidfish is right if you are pushing a 14 fiberglass you will definitely use more than a light aluminum flat bottom. With the Lund you are somewhere in between. This is just a baseline to go by.

My 70 evinrude behind a 15' cobia doesn't burn that much. Only about 3 gallons per hour at wot. Sounds like you're running rich or have wrong/ bad prop.

My 1984 35 HP pushing a 16" GF Örnvik dighny, did burm 1 3/4 gallon an hour at WOT. I dont know if the 35 is more effecient than the detuned 25 HP, its same block but different exhaust and prop.
