I have a 1987 Evinrude 225, and I believe the fuel pump went bad. It would not idle for more than a few mins, unless I pumped the primer bulb. That was the only way I could keep it going. I had the fuel line hooked up to a portable tank to eliminate fuel line problems. The engine had the VRO 2 pump installed, but the oil line was blocked off and I was premixing.
So before I spent 400 on a new pump I tried a cheap electric first. The pump is a 4-7 psi 32 gph. It starts and idles good with this pump. But I cant keep it running in gear. Im thinking the pump is just too small, and I should probably go back to original equipment.
My question is are there any cheaper alternatives to the 389 vro fuel only style pump? (pn 5007422). What have you guys done instead of just buying the VRO?
