good morning, I am in the process of buying a used cabin boat (24 footer) fitted with a EVINRUDE 225 VRO, numbers on the motor are E225TLCED and GO2273190 I have never owned a EVINRUDE MOTOR before what would the fuel oil mixture be and what are theese motors like regarding, reliability, performance and crusing speed (on the plane and then just backed off) fuel consumption, what is a good way to clean/ flush out the water cooling system of this motor,Kind Regards William Wright,

Re: Evinrude 225 vro general information required,

Fuel mixture on that engine is 50:1 using TCW3 oil and min87 octane rated gasoline. If the VRO pump is still connected and in operating order, there is no need to mix as the pump mixes the proper ratio before it enters the carburetors.

Reliability rating is excellent on the engine in question providing it has been upkept by its previous owner.

The engine shoul be propped to turn at least 5800 rpms at wide open throttle and 6000 wouldn't hurt a bit.I'm guessing that once on plane ,that 4500 rpm would be a decent cruising speed to maintain the planed posture of that rig.Expect fuel consumption to be roughly 10% percent of the rated horsepower per hour at wide open throttle.Even less at cruising speed with the boat on plane.

Most people use a flush muff connected to a utility water supply to flush engine out after use ,particularly after being run in salt water.Once muff(with water turned on) is connected to the lower unit water intake, simply start the engine and let run at idle speed for 5 minutes or so.Just make sure you turn the engine off before the water supply.Good luck.

By the way, that engine model number translates to a 1989 model.

Re: Evinrude 225 vro general information required,

OB thank you very much for your reply I take it that the consumption is in us gallons per hour, out here we work in the old english gallon( 4.54 litres per gallon) if you are talking U.S. gallons then the consumption is pretty much okay.I will do the calculations and conversions later on. the motor is in good condition and runs well acording to the dealership that has it for sale, but I will only know on the weekend after I have taken it out for a few hours on the local dam, thanks again and kind regards Willian Wright.

Re: Evinrude 225 vro general information required,

word o advice, carefully inspect the vro pump, make sure its at least a 4 wire model. the 4 wire model with the removable oulet nipple is even better, then have the over heat an no oil alarms tested, the no oil alarm will reqire the oil line to be dissconected and the engine run until the no oil alarm sounds so run it on a 50/1 premix, then plug the oil line back in and see if it self primes, test will take 10 min or so. aslo test the low tank level alarm, its also a good time to clean the tank and check the oil filter condition. if proper oil, fuel and cooling system maint is done that motor lasts a long time usually.
the cooling system needs maint, if the pump,t-stats and pressure valve is not working correctly it can lead to issues at low speed, the voltage regulator can get hot, and at high speends the engine can.

Re: Evinrude 225 vro general information required,

Hello Rodbolt, thank you for your reply. Would it not be better to run this motor on premix only and eliminate the autolube system? Then there is absolutely no chance of oil starvation, what should be done to bypass the autolube and run on 50:1 premix,Is there any advantage of running the "autolube system if not what process should I follow so as to disconnect this system, what is the correct cooling system maintaince procedure for this system other than flushing the cooling system after use, this is the first time I have owned a 'Rude motor. kind regards William Wright,
